Chapter 35
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
The smell of burnt coffee filled the air as the waitress mumbled something to herself filled with expletives and pushed the pot into the sink creating a large banging sound. Heads turned from the booths and the stools that lined the counter, reacting to the wave of noise developed by the angry waitress.
A stream of smoke rippled up from a patron at another booth, unaware that he would soon be chastised by his waitress, Ruth, and that it would come accompanied by a tapping toe and crossed arms.
At the furthest booth from the door, Falau had tucked himself into the last booth and sat with his back shifted toward the window. The smell of the cigarette smoke begged him to light up his own, but the payment to Ruth after prior infractions would be too much. At his last indiscretion, she had added the cost of a package of Nicorette gum to his bill and given it to him before he left with a stern reprimand that if he wanted nicotine while he was there then he should use the gum to control himself.
Just as expected, the hefty waitress that looked more like a starting lineman for the New England Patriots than a waitress strolled up to the table, crossed her arms and her foot went to tapping. Falau pulled himself to the side to watch the show and saw the look on the manâs face at the pressure being put on him from the woman. Within moments the cigarette was extinguished, and Ruth began her reprimand.
Cling, Cling.
The bell above the door rang, announcing another patron. Popping his head up and looking toward the door, Falau made eye contact with Tyler entering the coffee shop.
âWhat the hell, no suit?â said Falau before his friend got to the table. Tyler was dressed simply with a classic concert T-shirt from George Thoroughgood and the Delaware Destroyers and a pair of jeans. He had on hiking boots and a pair of classic aviator sunglasses. The young manâs muscle covered body showed with the short sleeve shirt more than it ever had to Falau. The suits he normally wore covered his body only showing he was fit but not how fit he really was.
âNot suiting up today,â said Tyler, sliding into the booth across from his friend. âYou my friend, are my only business of the day and then Iâm off duty. I have been told to take at least one day off per week going forward so that I wonât burn out.â
âSo, you figured you would just add a little business on your first day off?â asked Falau with a sly look on his face.
âItâs a start,â said Tyler. âIâm looking the part and Iâm trying to be the part.â
âYou will get there but it will be hard for you,â said Falau âSo what do you do with a day off? Last time I saw you have fun was when we went to the Red Sox game.â
âI was thinking about that for today, but theyâre out of town,â said Tyler, shaking his head slightly.
